Requirements for Admission and Progression in Teacher Education

 

To be admitted to the Teacher Education Program the student must:

1. File a Declaration of Major form at the end of the first year;

2. File an application for admission to the Division of Educational and Psychological Studies at the end
    of the sophomore year;

3. Score a minimum score of 172 or 319 (CBT) on the reading section, a minimum score of 171 or
    316 (CBT) on the writing section and a minimum score of 170 or 315 (CBT) on the mathematics
    section of the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) of the Praxis series;

4. Have a minimum grade of “C” in all courses.

5. Complete an interview with the professional program committee in the division.

Formal admission to the Education Department is contingent upon a student’s successful completion of
stage one requirements. Students in stage one are designated as Pre-Education majors. In stage one,
which may span no more than the first three years of coursework, a student must pass Praxis I and have a
GPA of 2.5. Doing so allows the student to move from Pre-Education status to formal admission as an
Education Major.

At the end of the third year of Pre-Education status or after three unsuccessful attempts to pass Praxis 1,
whichever comes first, students will be advised to declare a major within a different division at Dillard
University. 

For progression to the junior level, the student must:

1. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5;

2. Score a minimum of 161 on the Principles of Learning and Teaching PK-3, K-6, 4-8 or 7-12 test; and

3. Have a minimum grade of “C” in all courses. 

For progression to the senior level and student teaching, the student must: 

1. Maintain a cumulative CPA of 2.5, and

2. Pass the specialty area of the Praxis II Series.

Requirements for Graduation

To be eligible for graduation from the Teacher Education Program at Dillard University, the student must:

1. Pass all sections of the Praxis I and Praxis II Series;

2. Pass the Writing Proficiency Examination or successfully complete English 200; Educational & Psychological     Studies

3. Have a cumulative CPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale;

4. Complete student teaching with a grade of “B” or better, and

5. Complete 120 volunteer hours of community service.

Transfer Students

Applicants desiring to transfer into the Division’s Teacher Education Program at Dillard University
with advanced standing must:

1. Submit an application with appropriate fees to the university;

2. Submit an application to the Division of Educational and Psychological Studies;

3. Have a minimum grade of “C” or better in all courses;

4. Complete an interview with the Professional Program Committee in the Division of Education
    and Psychological Studies;

5. Meet the 2.5 CPA requirements; and

6. Meet the Praxis Series requirements. 

Transfer of Credit

Students are expected to complete all upper-level professional education courses at Dillard University.
If the advisor finds it necessary for a student to earn credit in upper-level professional courses at another
institution, the advisor must submit the appropriate recommendation to the Dean of the Division and the
Office of Academic Affairs for approval.
